Thankfully, the penguin has successfully recovered.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Cape Town, South Africa (28 May 2025) \u2014 <\/i>In March, a little African penguin was waddling at night when she was hit by a car in Simon\u2019s Town (AKA, Penguin Town).<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, a Simons Town local spotted the penguin\u2019s trouble and quickly got the injured seabird out of the road and away from further harm\u2019s way.<\/p>\n<p>The penguin was taken to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) who care for seabirds in any and all realms of distress. Here, she became known as AP243 as her road to recovery began.<\/p>\n<p>Following medication and X-rays, it was revealed that AP243 had actually been carrying an egg; her baby waiting to be laid.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_152389\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-152389\" style=\"width: 1278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-152389 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/penguin-xray.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1278\" height=\"1634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/penguin-xray.jpg 1278w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/penguin-xray-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/penguin-xray-801x1024.jpg 801w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/penguin-xray-768x982.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/penguin-xray-1201x1536.jpg 1201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1278px) 100vw, 1278px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-152389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Martine Viljoen \/ Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After over a month of steady recovery work, SANCCOB has announced that not only has AP243 made a remarkable recovery, but she was also released!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSANCCOBSavesSeabirds%2Fvideos%2F1809169229647706%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=380&amp;t=0\" width=\"380\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Despite the many cheers for AP243 as she waddled away freely, sombre energy was also present as her egg, although laid, did not survive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t know if AP243 will ever be able to carry another egg. We don\u2019t know what the long-term effects of this trauma will be. And with the African Penguin population as low as it is, we simply can\u2019t afford to lose a single breeding female,\u201d the SANCCOB team said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The recovery of AP243 is a reminder that incidents like seabirds being hit by a car simply shouldn\u2019t happen. Conservationists are loudly calling for caution from motorists who find themselves in or near penguin-populated areas like Simons Town, especially as the seabird is classed as Critically Endangered.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cThese seabirds cross roads to reach the ocean, and your caution could be the difference between life and death for them,\u2019 SANCCOB said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The same is true for all animals that have and continue to adapt to urbanisation in areas they either have always called home or those that they\u2019ve been pushed toward due to the human-influenced spoiling of their natural surroundings.
