Love them or hate them, snakes play an important role in our environment, so the Johannesburg Wildlife Vet did everything they could to save a little Brown House Snake.<\/h2>\n

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 January 2021)<\/em> – The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital<\/a> treats all indigenous animals free of charge and that includes snakes. Snakes play an important role in our environment so if you ever find one that is injured, call your local wildlife rescue organisation to come collect it. They will treat it and then they will release it somewhere safe and away from populated areas.<\/p>\n

That is what happened with this poor little Brown House Snake. The snake was attacked by a house cat and badly injured. The snake was rescued and taken to the wildlife vet for treatment.<\/p>\n

“This Brown house snake (Boaedon capensis) was caught by a cat, and had with a few deep lacerations as a result – one of which exposed her stomach. The wounds were debrided (dead and infected tissue removed) under anaesthetic, with the two deepest wounds stitched closed. While receiving antibiotics and pain meds, she is also being tube fed every couple of days while we allow time for her wounds to heal. Once the wounds are fully healed, her stomach will be able to expand without risking her stitches tearing.<\/span><\/p>\n

We recently removed the bandage covering her deepest stitched wounds, and so far, she is healing well. She received a luke warm bath this weekend to assist in her shedding as well as to give her some additional exercise now that the bandage is off.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Even if you hate snakes, be sure to protect them because you will hate a rodent living in your home even more! A snake will always hear you coming and make sure it gets out of your way. The only time snakes will strike is if you take them by surprise or in any way threaten them.<\/p>\n
